15 Jobs to do from Home
March 24, 2017
The growing rate of unemployment in Nigeria is alarming. Every year, more people graduate from the university, and end up joining the ever-increasing labour market. The way Nigerians embraced ponzi schemes shows the dire need to break out from poverty and what we all know as "recession". Everybody seems to agree that things are hard in Nigeria because of the high cost of living. So, for everybody that wants to earn extra cash, stay-home mom, student, corp member, graduate and those that wish to have a side job, here are 15 jobs you can do from home.
1. Dry-cleaning:
For those of you that stay home all day, most times all you do is just wash clothes. Most times you do a lot of laundry for yourself and other family members, so why not earn from it? Meet some neighbors, a few busy people around you, offer to do their laundry for them, do it well, deliver it and get some cool extra cash.
2. Makeup Artist:
Oh yes! I have a friend that is a stay-home mom. In the mornings, she prepares her kids for school and then she starts her makeup for picking them up from school. So every weekday, all she does is wake, send kids to school, makeup, bring kids back from school. What are you doing with all that expensive makeup in your makeup bag? Use it and earn some cool cash. It's not all about making snapchat videos and posting slay pictures with captions like, "brows on fleek", "shadows popping" "lipstick dripping" "makeup on fleek". It's time to make somebody's face to be on fleek too. Grab your mom, sister or friend and give them that banging makeover you always give yourself. You can also do makeup tutorial videos with your phone or camera.
3. Private Tutor:
When I left secondary school, while I waited for my admission, I can remember teaching French to some people and I got real cash from it. It's quite simple, basically helping kids understand what they didn't understand in school. Some children are slower than others and need special attention to catch up to others in a certain area. You just need to come in a few hours a week and teach them. The good thing is that you can have different kids from different families and they pay you differently. Imagine getting 10-50k from 4 or 5 different families, depending on how much you agree on, do the math. These people earn more than regular teachers and they also have a flexible time-table too.
4. Personal Trainer:
This is for you the workout freak with banging abs and biceps. You're a pro at this workout thingy, so why not help someone lose weight or stay fit? You really don't have anything to lose, you're working out as you teach, so you're still in shape. Look at that new mom next door that wants to get her model figure back, that Oga struggling with pot belly, or that kid with low self-esteem because of their excess weight, all of them are potential clients. Help them lose some pounds and get a few extra bucks along the way.
10. Freelance Writer:
I know people that write amazing posts on facebook and Wattpad, even some good bloggers. There are freelance writing jobs online, you need to check out some sites like

5. Graphics Designer:
So, you have a laptop, all you use it to do is watch movies, play video games and listen to music. I didn't know graphics designing was quite lucrative until I started blogging, these people wanted to bury me with outrageous prices. So, as broke as I was, I got pissed! I sat at my laptop all day till I figured out how to do my blog logo and all my graphics myself. You can put to use all that computer school knowledge right now. I know it's a bit deeper than that but you have to start somewhere and learn the ropes from there.
6. Blogging:
If you think blogging is not lucrative, look at the likes of Linda Ikeji, Uche Pedro (Bellanaija), Noble Igwe (360 Nobs), Tosin Ajibade (OloriSuperGal) and try again. The thing is blogging requires consistency, and perseverance. The money might not come initially but, if you do it right, with time you'll get paid.
7. Hair-Dresssing:
Little or no capital is needed for this. You can start with people around you, your handwork and referrals usually sells your market for you.
8. Gele Tying:
Are you the type that is very good with scarves and head-ties? Stop saying, "I can only tie for myself". Learn how to tie other people's own. Spread the word to you friends and contacts let them contact you when that have weddings, burial, child dedications, or even church service. Guess what you need to start up? A box of pins!!!
9. Baking:
During the last Fempower 2017, I listened to Rachael Ogugua the CEO of Prechy Cakes tell the story of how she started her baking business from home without an oven. She learnt how to bake on Youtube, imagine that! You can start making cupcakes, muffins, chin-chin, peanuts and take them to nearby shops or to church, or school and sell it.

11. Personal Shopper:
Hello Shopaholic! A day at the mall is a perfect day for you. Personally I love shopping a lot, well, when you exclude trolling round the market under the hot sun with my mom. Some people have money but they don't have a good wardrobe. They just don't simply know how to go about it or they are just too busy, or they don't know where to get the good stuff. That is where personal shoppers like me come in. Getting paid to help people work on their wardrobe. It is also a form of fashion consulting, you don't necessarily need a degree for it, a good eye for fashion and brands and a good reputation will get you far in the business.
12. Party-Planning:
Where is the life of the party? Without you the party will be lame! All your friends depend on you to plan their birthdays, outings, anniversaries, engagement parties and bridal shower. When it comes to parties, you're the master planner and you leave no stone unturned. You know the baddest Djs in town, the rocking venues, the right drinks and food for each party, Well it's time to earn from it!
.
13. Photography:
Photography is turning out to be one of the most lucrative jobs in Nigeria with some photographers not earning less than a million Naira per event. One of the badass photographers I know, Chuka Ezebuiro (Chez Imagery) learnt the basics of photography all on Youtube then perfected his art from there. If you can't afford the big time photography classes, consult Youtube, enroll in free online photography courses, watch videos, attend webinars, you can learn almost anything online.
14. Babysitting:
Do Nigerians do this babysitting thing? Yes they do! Start collecting money from all those uncles and aunts dropping your troublesome cousins with you. Tell them to tell their friends and colleagues, BAM!!! you're in business! Then for you the stay-home mom, you already stay home all day taking care of your kids, so why not watch over a busy person's child too? When they have events to attend, a date, a church program, or they just want a break, provide them the help they need. Start charging per hour, if they decide to spend extra time outside, well it's going to cost them more!
15. Catering:
I know someone that started her Catering after her graduation from her kitchen. She made daily and weekly meals for people and delivered it to them and got paid for it. She started making pots of soup and stew and delivered to clients that were too busy to do so or just didn't know their way around the kitchen. Stop bragging about your culinary skills online and put it to good use. Another area is food blogging, people like Nma Okpara of http://www.nigerianlazychef.com/ have given a different interpretation to catering.
The thing is when you start any of these jobs, it will not be easy for you. If you're really out to make money, be consistent and give it your best. I hope this article helped, do share your comments and thoughts on this in the comment box below.

Love, Sharon.
