As a young person, the question we are faced with most times
is that of purpose, of life. Adulthood
was forced on a lot of us, so most of us are stuck, confused! You don’t understand
this new independence and all the responsibilities it comes with. It’s truly
crazy, it’s a rush, it’s liberating and at the same time you don’t know what to
do with this new found freedom. Let me shock you, this new found freedom can
either make you or mar you.
One thing about life is that we always have a choice.
Sometimes you choose between the good and the bad, sometimes it’s not that
simple because there’s a grey area. How
did we go from a place where our parents made the decisions to this point where
we get to make it ourselves? We couldn’t wait to be adults and experience this
liberality and freedom, we wanted to grow up sooo bad but it’s not as fun as we
thought it would be.
Now you’re done with school, or you'll soon be done with school, and don’t know the next step to
take. Yeah you're studying something in school but it's not like you want to make a career out of it, you settled for it because you just needed to get into school. Now you have to get a job, you have to move out of your parents’ house,
no more free cash from family members and ooops! It’s time to get married! All
your mates are getting hitched every other weekend and you’re just stuck on the
sidelines trying to get in tune with the music and the frenzy while trying to
understand the reason why you’re alive. You seriously don’t even know what you
want to do with your life.
STOP! Take a break before you breakdown! Do you realize that
every decision you make right now has dire consequences? I’m not trying to
scare you, I’m just trying to tell you how serious life is. So seriously STOP!
And THINK! What do you want to do with your life? It’s like a race, no matter how fast you run in the wrong
direction, you can’t reach your destination. We have to take out time to think it through.
Mehn! where are we really going?
This is not my regular blogpost, but I've heard a lot of young people complain about it to keep quiet about it. There is so much we can do, it's not enough to complain about it or feel sad about it, it's time to work it out. There are a few things I've decided to do personally:
1. THINK!
I have decided to take out an hour a day to just
THINK! The greatest things were created in a solemn solo moment of brooding and
thinking. I'll keep thinking it through until I figure it out. There is this quote by Oscar Wilde; "We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars". The fact that you are in the gutter doesn't mean you can't focus on the stars and pull yourself out of the gutter.
2. Surround Yourself With Positivity.
I've stayed around negative people long enough to know that negativity is like water that quenches your zeal, and positivity is like oxygen that fuels your zeal. Be careful who you share your dreams and aspirations with. If you share a million dollar idea with the wrong person, they will make you believe it's not worth a dollar. So I'll emphasise on this, distance yourself from negative people.
3. Get Inspired!
There are young people out there that have figured out their purpose and they are making serious impact. Follow up these people, find out their success stories, get their emails ask them questions about life. People have gone ahead of us and have done well, we need to get inspired by their stories. I'll help out with this, "The Talk" will be back with success stories of young people and entrepreneurs who have made impact, so keep your fingers crossed for that.
