Stylereine: afro

'Fro Diaries.

3 months ago, I decided to do the big chop and cut my hair. Most people did not understand why I did it. Well, my hair stopped growing, the chemicals got to my hair and it lost its glow and jet black colour. It became pale and I experienced a lot of breakage. So I took the bold step to cut it low. Looking back right now, I really don't regret it.

A lot of people admire my TWA (teeny-weeny-afro) but they don't know the hardwork behind it. It takes a lot of hardwork and patience. I put in more work on my hair because of its coarse and stubborn nature.

I braid my hair at night to make it easy for me to comb in the morning. I make simple braids as shown above. While preparing for bed, I just take 10 minutes and braid it. In the morning it gives me afro curls. Combing it requires a good wide-tooth comb and a lot of moisture (water).

Naturalistas are always ready to experiment and try out new stuff with their hair. You have to discover what is right for your hair and stick to it. It's not about what is trending or what is expensive, it's about knowing and understanding your hair and observing how your hair reacts to new products and sticking to what works for you. Honestly, I don't flood my hair with chemicals because that's what ruined my hair in the first place. I stick to mosturiser, shea butter (ori), and coconut oil and I add honey to my shampoo and equally condition my hair a lot. A lot of moisture (water) is always good for your hair.

Always have hair accessories like hair pins, hairbands, scarves, face-caps and hats for bad-hair days. If you want to be part of the natural hair movement, you can just take that bold step. Remember that it is not an easy journey but it's worth it. Black hair grows too when you treat it like black hair and stop flooding it with products not meant for it. Whatever your hair type is, invest in your hair because your hair is your crown.
